History

The NPA was established with the goal of fostering necessary improvements to the postdoctoral situation in the United States. There was no organization with the sole aim of achieving improvements in the postdoctoral experience. The NPA sought to crystallize the diffuse postdoc debate and provide a focal point for achieving administrative and policy changes.

The founding board was comprised of postdoctoral representatives from across the country, each a chair or founding member of an institutional postdoctoral association. This board began as a committee that coalesced during Science's NextWave Postdoc Network meeting in April 2002 in Washington D.C. At this meeting, attendees expressed broad support for a national postdoctoral organization that could provide focus and effect positive change. The founding board secured funding, put together the bylaws, set up the committee structure, and did all the tasks required to set up a new organization.

NPA Logo

The NPA is a nonprofit, 501(c)3 professional association that advocates on behalf of postdoctoral scholars – individuals holding doctoral degrees who are pursuing a temporary period in which they obtain additional scholarly training and professional development necessary for a wide range of career paths. Established in 2003, the NPA serves individual postdoctoral scholars and the institutions and organizations that support them.

In recognition of the NPA’s 15 years of service to the postdoctoral community, the Board of Directors announced a new organizational logo. Introduced in January 2018, this new logo seeks to highlight the potential of our members, both as scholars on the brink of discovery and leaders engaging the community in critical discussions and advocacy initiatives pertaining to mentorship, inclusiveness, and professional development and recognition.
