7th Annual National Postdoc Appreciation Day Symposium
Wednesday, September 30, 2015
9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.
Robert Wood Johnson Medical School (RWJMS), Life Sciences Building, Busch Campus
Join the 7th annual postdoc appreciation day symposium hosted by the Robert Wood Johnson/Rutgers PDA. The symposium highlights postdoctoral achievement and career development. This event is completely organized and run by postdocs and
the theme for this year’s symposium is “Scientific Communication.” As postdocs prepare for the next step in their careers in research, policy, teaching, and business, it will be critical to explain the positive impact of scientific
research on society and global health.
The symposium is one of the largest postdoctoral appreciation events in the country and draws students, postdoctoral fellows, and faculty attendees from Rutgers and many other large universities in the NY-NJ-PA tri-state area. The population
of attendees is incredibly diverse with a significant portion of individuals from minority groups and many international scholars.
This year, they are extremely honored to announce their keynote speaker Keith Micoli, Ph.D., Director of the Postdoctoral Office, NYU. They will also feature a guest seminar with Barbara Houtz, STEM Education Solutions.
There will be a poster session, oral presentations by postdocs, lunch, refreshments, and networking opportunities. There will be cash prizes for the best posters.

G10 Biotech
Speaker: Jean-luc Doumont, Ph.D.
Useful as each of them can be, a large body of tips and tricks is impossible to remember, at least in a practical usable way, unless it is structured into a balanced, meaningful hierarchy. This talk proposes and illustrates three simple yet solid ideas that lead to more effective communication and that underpin every other guideline: easy to remember, readily applicable, and always relevant—in short, valuable for the rest of your life.
Jean-luc Doumont is a highly sought after presenter who speaks at universities throughout the world and international conferences. He is an articulate, entertaining and thought-provoking presenter and has given hundreds of talks and workshops in English, French, Dutch and Spanish. He understands scientists and understand how to teach them to become better communicators.
Doumont is an engineer by training and was educated at Louvain School of Engineering and received his Ph.D. in applied physics from Stanford University.

Your local MUSC PDA also is pleased to announce a special presentation by invited speaker and employment researcher Bob Ross, entitled: Job Boards and the Hiring Manager: What You Don’t Know Can Hurt You
Transitioning from the academic to the non-academic workplace is a challenging proposition in and of itself. However, many job seekers will unwittingly put themselves at a competitive disadvantage by committing two critical errors: overestimating
the effectiveness of job boards, and underestimating the importance of connecting with the “hiring manager” in organizations of interest.
From an outside-looking-in business perspective that revolves around 40+ years of experience in corporate recruiting and organizational development, Ross will present innovative, down-to-earth strategies and insights on how to strengthen
and expand the job search, and thereby improve the odds of success.
Ross’s presentation will take place in BSB202, Thursday, September 24, 2015 from 12:30 p.m. - 1:30 p.m., with questions to follow. Light refreshments will be
provided.
Please join them for this exciting and highly relevant discussion! Thank you for all of your hard work and dedication.

The Society of Toxicology (SOT) Postdoctoral Assembly (PDA) has a number of events to offer during NPAW:
Join the PDA-sponsored webinar, “Your Pathway to an Independent Academic Career: Tips and Good Practices for K99/R00s”
Wednesday, September 23, 2:00 p.m. Eastern Time (11:00 a.m. Pacific)
Mark your calendars! The SOT Postdoctoral Assembly (PDA) is sponsoring a grant-writing webinar entitled, “Your Pathway to an Independent Academic Career: Tips and Good Practices for K99/R00s.”
Many postdocs have their eyes set on academic careers. An early challenge they will face is applying for and receiving their first funded grant. Crafting a fundable research proposal is no small task for anyone and requires
the use of clear, concise language that will guide the reviewer through the proposal and to an enthusiastic, positive outcome. Important tips will be discussed on how to write a successful, competitive grant, as well as a few common missteps
that should be avoided. The goal of this webinar is to shed some light on grantsmanship issues for those junior investigators/postdoctoral scholars who are planning to write Pathway to Independence (PI) Award (K99/R00) applications.
Hosted by PDA secretary, Tongde Wu, and councilor, Karilyn Sant, the webinar speaker will give guidance on how to apply for the Pathway to Independence (PI) Award. The speaker will share his insight into the application process and offer advice for making a competitive application.
Speaker: Michael C. Humble, Ph.D., program administrator, Genes, Environment and Health Branch Division of Extramural Research and Training, NIEHS
Register for this free PDA webinar today! Q & A session will follow the speaker presentation.
Other highlights of the week include a blog series celebrating and reflecting on the postdoctoral experience. Articles will be published as SOT Communiqué blogs for all to enjoy.
Through these events, the PDA joins the NPA in focusing attention on the contributions and achievements of postdoctoral scholars. We hope that all SOT members will take time during NPAW to acknowledge the postdocs in your communities and
institutions.
