Gladstone is launching a career exploration program that will connect like-minded postdocs to work together to learn more about their career options and what is required to achieve their career goals. We will provide a framework for creating a peer team - a small group of peers who will meet regularly, to share what they are learning, to challenge each other, and to keep each other motivated. We will borrow principles and practices from UCSF’s MIND program, to set you up for successful self-exploration and ultimate realization of your career goals. If you are interested, please come to our launch where we will walk you through the process, expectations and set up peer groups.

Why My Research is Cool: Translating Innovation Beyond Academia

Jeffrey Karp, Ph.D., is an associate professor at HMS/BWH, and is principal faculty at the Harvard Stem Cell Institute and affiliate faculty at MIT through the Harvard-MIT Division of Health Sciences and Technology. Lina Williamson, D.V.M, Ph.D., has worked for Novartis Pharmaceuticals as part of a cross-divisional business development team responsible for feeding the NAH research therapeutics pipeline, as well as for Novartis Institutes for Biomedical Research’s Strategic Alliances team, where she was responsible for leading the global scouting for innovation efforts from academic institutions, including academic incubators and startup companies. Her interest in cutting-edge technologies led her to join a biomedical engineering startup, Emulate Inc., from Harvard University, which focuses on the development of Organs-on-Chips. Williamson currently works with the Brigham Research Institute (BRI).

They will have a panel discussion consisting of four individuals representing the fields of: consulting, data mining, policy, entrepreneurship/academia.  This session will be moderated by Lauren Celano, CEO, Propel Careers

Teaching careers specialist, Megan Mittelstadt, Ph.D., lecturer in genetics, Landry Cancer Biology Curriculum Fellow, and Charles Follen Folsom, teaching fellow, Harvard Medical School, will discuss getting prepared for a career in teaching.

In addition, they will have a poster session and oral presentations. To conclude the event, there will be an awards cocktail reception. Here, the deputy chief scientific officer, William Hahn, Ph.D., will give out awards to the best oral presenter and best poster presenter at the retreat. Raffle prizes will be handed out as well. All Dana-Farber postdocs and graduate students are encouraged to attend this free event.

On behalf of The Graduate School and The Michigan State University postdoctoral association (MSU-PDA) we cordially invite all postdocs and research associates to the regional postdoctoral appreciation meeting & networking lunch on Tuesday, September 22, 2015 between 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. taking place at the Michigan State University Kellogg Hotel & Conference Center. This event will be held jointly with the University of Michigan and Wayne State University (RSVP is required).

This year's event features morning workshop sessions focused on conflict management & communication, as well as resources for academic and non-academic job searches. Wednesday, September 23, 2015 - The 2015 postdoc awards luncheon will recognize the hard work and dedication of two of its postdocs by announcing the winners of the 2015 Paul W. Kincade Outstanding Grantsmanship Award and the 2015 Charles T. Esmon Outstanding Publication Award. These two awards are sponsored by the OMRF postdoc association. All OMRF trainees and their labs are encouraged to attend the luncheon.

Thursday, September 24, 2015 - The OMRF PDA, and EMD Millipore, are sponsoring a happy hour4:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m., outdoors in the OMRF courtyard. Food and drinks, kindly sponsored by EMD Millipore's generous support, will include food and drinks for OMRF postdocs, students, and lab personnel. Alcoholic beverages will include selections from local brewing company, Anthem Brewery.
Also, throughout the week, OMRF Human Resources department will be giving away free gas cards to randomly selected postdocs in  recognition of their hard work and dedication to research!

Tuesday, September 15, 2015 - SciPhD co-founders, Randall Ribaudo, Ph.D., and Larry Petcovic, M.S., will lead a half-day training workshop entitled “Preparing for Careers in Industry” from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at CHOP. The workshop will introduce fellows to 24 business competencies valued in industry and relate them to industry job ads and descriptions. An ice cream social will follow later in the afternoon, beginning at 3:00 p.m.

Wednesday, September 16, 2015 - Philip Clifford, Ph.D., associate dean for research in the College of Applied Health Sciences at the University of Illinois at Chicago, will present “Put Your PhD to Work: Planning for a Successful Career in Science” at 12:00 p.m. At this interactive workshop, you will learn a logical, step-by-step process for exploring your career options and deciding which will provide the best fit for your own set of skills, interests, and values. By the end of the session, you will set specific goals for taking charge of your career.

Thursday, September 17, 2015 – Mary Mitchell will be on hand at 10:30 a.m. presenting, “Interviews: Formal and Social - Making the Most of Every Opportunity.” Her workshop will focus on tips and tricks to help you successfully navigate informal and formal interviews. Later that afternoon, the entire community is invited to the CHOP/UPenn family barbeque, taking place in the Colket Translational Research Building Lobby.

Transitioning from the academic to the non-academic workplace is a challenging proposition in and of itself. However, many job seekers will unwittingly put themselves at a competitive disadvantage by committing two critical errors:  overestimating the effectiveness of job boards, and underestimating the importance of connecting with the “hiring manager” in organizations of interest.

From an outside-looking-in business perspective that revolves around 40+ years of experience in corporate recruiting and organizational development, Ross will present innovative, down-to-earth strategies and insights on how to strengthen and expand the job search, and thereby improve the odds of success.

Ross’s presentation will take place in BSB202, Thursday, September 24, 2015 from 12:30 p.m. - 1:30 p.m., with questions to follow. Light refreshments will be provided.
