Storrs |
The Graduate School at the University of Connecticut has three exciting events planned to celebrate and further support its postdoc communities. Please join them on Tuesday, September 18 through Thursday, September 20 at Storrs campus.
The Graduate School wants to know how it can better support you in your scholarly and social journey here at UConn. Why not pop by and share a slice of pizza and chat directly with dean Kent E. Holsinger and
your colleagues about postdoctoral support at UConn.
When and where? Tuesday, September 18 at 12:00 p.m. at the Giolas conference room in the Nathan L. Whetten Graduate Center.
The Graduate School knows that there are more people finishing their doctorates, completing their postdoctoral contracts, and wanting to move beyond adjunct life than ever. With an over-saturated academic job market, how can
YOU stand out? Let them first provide you with a hearty lunch after which they will turn this challenging question to those who have been successful in recently transitioning to tenure-track or permanent teaching positions.
When and where? Wednesday, September 19, 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at Konover auditorium. A hearty lunch will be provided.
Data Blitz is an internal UConn research competition for postdocs held during NPAW. Each accepted competitor presents a five-minute “elevator pitch” of their research using a maximum of four slides. A panel of experienced
faculty and staff assess these pitches and award cash prizes at the end of the competition (The Graduate School reserves the right determine the appropriate use of funds. Note that these funds cannot be used for conference travel).
1st prize: $1000 2nd prize: $750 3rd prize: $500
Post-event, participants will receive collated feedback and comments to help develop their presentations in future and will be featured on The Graduate School’s website.
When and where? Thursday, September 20, 11:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at Alumni House. A stellar lunch will be provided for all participants and attendees.
Come along even if you’re not presenting:
- Start developing your own elevator pitch by seeing a broad spectrum of research from different fields and disciplines.
- Learn the tips and tricks on how to shape your own elevator pitch from experienced faculty.
- Support your postdoc colleagues.
- Free lunch.

Tallahassee |
Florida State University is holding a fall symposium, poster session, and five-minute research (5MR) competition on Friday, September 21.
This year’s fall symposium will highlight a dual keynote address by Judy Devine and Leah Sibbitt. Devine will role out the new Preparing Future Professional Program (PFP) along with the accompanying Preparing Future Faculty
(PFP) that was launched last spring as a program to guide postdoctoral scholars during their job search preparations. Sibbitt, director of the Career Center, will provide helpful tips in the job search process to include resources
available to postdoctoral scholars and their spouses during the process of the job hunt. Postdoctoral scholars can take advantage of the “Seminole Suit UP!” at JCPenney’s at 5:00 p.m. on September 16, where they will have open shopping
for FSU scholars only with 40 percent off all career-related clothing!
The Florida State University Office of Postdoctoral Affairs (OPDA) and PDA are jointly hosting the sixth annual fall postdoctoral poster competition and symposium. Poster awards will be $250 for first place in three divisions – life sciences,
physical sciences, and interdisciplinary/humanities. New this year is a five-minute research competition - hands down the best event!!! The only two regulations are that you (1) have to explain the impact of your research in five minutes
and (2) have to do so alone (no teams). You are allowed to use ANY medium you want (slides, video, sing, dance, recite literature, props – anything) but must appeal to an educated lay audience, reach across your discipline, and challenge
your audience to want to know more! A practice for all 5 MR competitors will be held August 30-31 in front of a small panel of judges. Feedback will be provided over the subsequent two weeks so you are ready to shine on September 21.
Prizes will be awarded, 1st - $1000, 2nd - $750, and 3 - $500 and you must agree to be filmed.

Early career researchers (ECRs) are disproportionately impacted by changing landscape of biomedical research – with evolving models of academic hiring, funding, publishing and evaluation – but aren’t often at the table when major decisions
are made. Jessica Polka, Ph.D., a founder of the Future of Research and member of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering
and Medicine’s Next Generation Researchers Initiative will
talk about national efforts to improve the training and career prospects of junior scientists, and how ECRs can be involved. Polka will also discuss ASAPbio, a scientist-driven initiative to accelerate science and
publication in biology, and how ECRs can participate in and influence the future of scientific communication.

In order to mark 2018 NPAW observance in a classical institutional way, throughout the academic ivories of Asian and Oceanic regions, the Asia & Oceania Post-Doctoral Academia (AOPDA), SAARC-ASEAN Postdoctoral Resource Academia (SAPRA) and SAIRI Postdoctoral Multiversity for the UN MDGs-SDGs Studies conjointly conducted high level thematic discussions and mentored sessions on different areas of academic interest and cross-boundary
cross-disciplinary emerging expediencies in postdoctoral research.
Delineated and demarcated by the SAIRI’s P.I. professor Qadhi Aurangzeb Al Hafi D.Litt et Phil, the ‘Reference-line Thematic Monograph for 2018-2019’ encompassed and entailed the topics of core-expediencies, ranging
from the baseline ‘normatives’ in human studies, the foundational ‘dynamics’ and standard ‘methodics’ in natural and social sciences, to the applied realm-orbs of the higher investigative segment-demesnes of human enterprise, were
brought under reference-line thematic considerations.
The abstract contemplations brought forth during postdoc appreciation mainly focused upon: the United Nations’ SDGs, the UN enterprises’ role in peace establishment, particularly in the poor populaces of the least developed vicinities
around the globe, to the peace & conflict situations in the ASEAN and SAARC regions and their escalating effects on the whole continental zones of Asia, Oceania and the entire Middle East and particularly in SAARC and ASEAN regions

As the 2018 NPAW proceedings coincide with the UN designated Peace Observance Day, AOPDA has dedicated all of the core thematic-focuses to the peace related issues throughout (but not limited to) the day.
In order to mark the UN Peace day in the backdrop of postdoc appreciation, AOPDA issued a special peace prize and scholarship for postdoctoral research in peace-conflict studies. The worthy scholarship medals
would be issued in the names of three merited adornees AOPDA Peace Award, who selflessly strived to raise the voice for Rohingya genocide prevention. The two UN officials; Zeid Ra’ad al-Hussein (The UN High Commissioner of
Human Rights), professor Yanghee Lee (UN Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Myanmar), and Dr. Muang Zarni (Academic Researcher and Expert on Ethnic Cleansing).

The high level thematic discussions, mentored sessions and institutional proceedings throughout the NPAW of postdoctoral research in the Asian and ASEAN regions were held under the directions of H. E. Justice (R) Dr. S.S. Paru L.L.D.,
D.Litt., the Chief Patron (CP) and the Chancellery Head (CH) of AOPDA, who also continues to hold the status of Chancellor Emeritus of SAARC-ASEAN Postdoctoral Resource Academia (SAPRA).
For the UN, Justice (R) Paru primed a thorough analysis and a tri-fold synthesis of the prevalent situation of ‘social injustice’ that is gradually becoming predominant in the customary frameworks of nearly every sector, segment
and section of human life.
Scientific sessions and technical symposia were also a special facet of NPAW, the topics ranged from ‘Teratogenicity Research’ Pre-birth Disability Prevention Investigative Case Studies’, ‘Magneto-Hydro-Tropism (MHT)’,
‘Sub-soil Hydro-Toxicology’, Impacts of DESPO-Asia on Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) Strategic Frameworks, and several primary topic-ranges of academic importance including Research Methodology.
An extravagance of 2018’s highlight of postdoc appreciations was embraced by the 2nd ‘Thematic Concept-Note Monograph’, unveiling the ‘Methodic Overview’ of the recently discovered phenomenon of Magneto-Hydro-Tropism (MHT-Discovery)
by Professor Dr. Qadhi Aurangzeb Al Hafi (the discoverer), at the higher inter-institutional forefronts of the academic ivories of the world

An all the way passed resolution has been furthered by AOPDA’s P.I., which necessitates an annual postdoc appraisal-review encompassing the cross-disciplinary and cross-referential impact factor (CD-IF &CR-IF) to be dealt-out and issued
subsequently.
As the 2018 NPAW proceedings coincided with the UN designated Peace Observance Day, AOPDA dedicated all of the core thematic-focuses to the peace related issues throughout (but not limited to) the NPAW observance.
During the NPAW 2018, Asia & Oceania Post-Doctoral Academia (AOPDA) extended region-wide institutional indorsements for significant postdoctoral resolutions, which were drafted and steered by Professor Dr. Qadhi Aurangzeb Al-Hafi,
the P.I.H. at AOPDA and SAIRI Postdoc Multiversity. Both of the resolutions have been widely and diversely agreed upon by academicians of Asian and Oceanic regions, as well as the US, Canada and UK.
Through an institutional unanimity accord by the postdoc academics from throughout the SAARC and ASEAN regions, the distinguished Pakistani female Hydro-toxicology Prevention expert Prof. Dr. Khalida M. Khan has been titled as
the ‘‘Postdoc Strategic Researcher of the Year 2018-2019’ in ‘Sustainable Water Conservation’’ for her merited services in the area of sub-soil water reservoirs’ prevention from the undue and disproportionate burdens of toxic wastes
due to the current contemporaneous sewerage-drainage practices predominantly prevailing in most of the Asian countries.
SAARC-ASEAN postdocs arranged a pledge-based panel discussion on the role that the postdocs and other academicians can play in;
- Ensuring and widening the institutional avenues and academic scopes of peace-related studies in diverse fields of higher research.
Uplifting the level and quality of multidisciplinary research in the Asian region.
