NPA Membership FAQ

NPA Membership FAQ

Answers to commonly asked NPA membership questions.

Why Join the NPA?

As the national voice of the postdoctoral community, the NPA is the one national entity representing both postdocs and their institutions. NPA promotes a culture of inclusion through advocacy, professional development, member engagement and a tireless dedication to diversity, equity and inclusion. To help further our mission, join over 20,000 individuals and 230 organizations as a member of the NPA.

The NPA is a true membership organization, meaning each dollar of your dues supports the NPA operating budgets that allows us to provide programs and resources to all of our members.

  • Members-only content with exclusive access to research, data collection and reports for members on important postdoc policies, issues, and practices.
  • Leadership opportunities where members can share and grow their expertise while volunteering with NPA committees and task forces.
  • Opportunities to learn to advocate by participating in activities to advance the interests of our member postdocs and their institutions.
  • Networking nationwide through committee meetings and other robust discussions for career growth and building cross-disciplinary connections.
  • NPA Annual Conference registration discount.

Membership Categories and Payment

Anyone! The NPA has membership options for both individuals and organizations.

  • Individuals. There are two types of individual membership, Affiliate and Full.
    • Affiliate individual memberships are free to individuals affiliated with current NPA organizational members. Affiliate memberships are open to graduate students, postdocs, and staff/faculty/non-postdocs. Affiliate members are not eligible to vote in NPA elections.
    • Full individual memberships are open to all persons (postdocs, grad students, anyone interested in the postdoc community), regardless of any association with an institution, and require modest, annual dues. Full individual members are eligible to vote in NPA elections.
  • Organizations. Organizational memberships are available for any entity that employs and/or supports postdocs, most often academic institutions, research institutes, corporations (industry members), and professional organizations.

  • Full, individual membership rates can be found at the bottom of the Join webpage.
  • Affiliate individual memberships are free (see eligibility criteria under types of memberships).
  • Organizational membership rates depend on the type of institution (academic, postdoc associations, professional societies, for-profit corporations) and their postdoc population number. The dues chart can be found at the bottom of the Join webpage.

  • Full individual memberships and organizational memberships are one year in length.
  • Affiliate memberships are five years in length.

Visit this page, select your membership type, create an account (username and password), and follow the simple directions on the main registration form.

Current organizational members are listed in the right column of this page. If your institution is listed there, you are eligible to join as a free, affiliate member. If not, you can join as a full individual member for a modest fee, but make sure to let your institution know you would like it to join the NPA.

If your membership type requires a fee, payment can be made by credit card, check or ACH/direct deposit. There is a “bill me” option for organizations if you need to pay by check or ACH/direct deposit. Memberships become active after payment is received.

Your invoice can be found by logging in to the NPA website and looking under the "Payments & History" tab in your membership profile.

Memberships in a category requiring dues can renew 90 days in advance of the membership expiration date.

Log in to the NPA website. If it is within 90 days of your expiration date, there will be a renewal link to click on in the top middle of the page. If not, click on your name in the upper right corner, in the drop down menu click on “Account + Setting”, in the main window click on “Payments & History,” click on “Membership,” lastly click on “Securely renew your membership now,” and follow the prompts.
