Change and Appreciation as The POSTDOCket Begins Its 15th Year
Share |

Volume 15, Issue 1 (January 2017)

Melissa Vaught

This year, the NPA celebrates its 15th year representing the postdoctoral community. It seems fitting that the 15th year heralds changes to the association’s newsletter, The POSTDOCket, as well.

If you’ve read The POSTDOCket previously, you’ll likely first notice the move from a PDF publication to HTML. With the new format, you’ll be able to more easily share links to specific articles with your colleagues. We hope that this format will serve our readers better in the coming year.

Beginning with this issue, The POSTDOCket will also be published monthly, rather than quarterly. You can expect four to five new articles per issue. As always, The POSTDOCket will continue covering a range of topics relevant to postdocs and the individuals and organizations that support them.

As in previous years, The POSTDOCket will be freely available to all for the first two weeks after publication. New issues are announced via NPA e-alerts and NPA social media channels. Individual and affiliate members of the NPA can also access The POSTDOCket archives. The Resource Development Committee is working with NPA staff to digitize back issues of The POSTDOCket. So in 2017, NPA members will be able to search and more easily access past issues.

Publication of The POSTDOCket would not be possible without the work of our authors and associate editors. Like the NPA as a whole, The POSTDOCket is a volunteer-driven effort, here to support the NPA and to serve the postdoc community at large.

This year, we’re delighted to have a team of seven associate editors:

●     Viviane Callier, PhD—science writer at the National Eye Institute

●     Kristy Hentchel, PhD—postdoctoral scholar at the University of Chicago

●     Stephani Page, PhD—postdoctoral fellow at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill

●     Andrew Pike, PhD—postdoctoral fellow at the University of Maryland, Baltimore

●     Ian Street, PhD—research associate at Dartmouth College

●     Irina Tiper, PhD—postdoctoral fellow at the U.S. Food and Drug Administration

●     Elaine Wells-Gray, PhD—postdoctoral fellow at The Ohio State University

We’re pleased to welcome Hentchel, Page, Pike, Street, and Tiper to the team in 2017 and to have Callier and Wells-Gray continuing with The POSTDOCket for a second year. These fantastic volunteers provide feedback and copyediting for authors, help ensure that The POSTDOCket is delivered to the NPA membership on schedule, and collaborate to develop new content for The POSTDOCket.

POSTDOCket authors hail from many career stages and sectors—postdocs, postdoc office administrators, career counselors, and others whose training and initiative have taken them all sorts of directions. Some have brought us a story, and others have become regular contributors. We can’t thank them enough for the time and energy they put into their article for our readership.

Maybe by now, you’re wondering how you can get involved. Perhaps there’s an experience you’d like to share or a topic you want to cover. Many POSTDOCket article start with ideas from our community. The POSTDOCket also regularly has profiles and stories in need of authors. So if you’d like to write but aren’t sure where to start, we might have just the thing that suits your interests. If you’re interested in contributing to The POSTDOCket either way, all it takes is a quick email to get the ball rolling.

Melissa Vaught, PhD, is the editor-in-chief of The POSTDOCket.
