|Resources for Postdoc Women|
Over the past several decades, there has been a dramatic increase in the number of doctorates awarded to women, particularly in STEM. However, women continue to be underrepresented in tenured faculty roles, senior academic management positions, and senior positions in the broader workforce. It’s important to understand the obstacles that impede the career transitions of postdoc women and how to alleviate those obstacles institutionally and through individual career development.
From Ph.D. to Professoriate: The Role of the Institution in Fostering the Advancement of Postdoc Women
A resource book developed by the NPA as part of NPA ADVANCE (see below) in 2013. The book provides an overview of our current understanding of the various factors impeding postdoc women's continuation in academia and recommended practices that have shown promise for aiding these women in overcoming these obstacles. The goal is to help focus institutions' efforts to support postdoc women to foster their career advancement.
Elsevier Advancing Postdoc Women Guidebook
The NPA published the Advancing Postdoc Women Guidebook to provide essential information on programs and resources available to postdoc women as they progress in their careers. The postdoctoral position - a temporary period of training and mentored research following the receipt of a doctoral degree - represents a critical transition point in which the numbers of women scientists and engineers declines significantly. With this guidebook, the NPA hopes to stem this decline by providing solutions to some of the biggest obstacles to women’s career advancement.
The guidebook contains the following chapters: Utilizing Professional Societies and Associations to Advance Your Career, Beyond “Finding Good Mentors” to “Building and Cultivating Your Mentoring Team,” Making the Most of Your Postdoc: Career Preparation and Planning, Beyond Graduate School, and Work-Life and Childcare Resources for Postdoc Women.
The guidebook was funded through the 2012 New Scholars Grant, awarded by the Elsevier Foundation. The New Scholars Program supports projects to help early- to mid-career women scientists balance family responsibilities with demanding academic careers and addresses the attrition rate of talented women scientists.
The Elsevier Advancing Postdoc Women Clearinghouse is a site developed by the NPA for postdoc women outlining programs and resources offered by 46 professional associations and societies to postdoc women or women in general to enhance their advancement into science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM), and social, behavioral and economic sciences (SBE) disciplines.
About NPA ADVANCE
NPA ADVANCE: From Postdoc to Faculty: Transition Issues for Women Scientists is a project to foster the transition of women postdocs into the professoriate. Supported by a three-year grant from the National Science Foundation’s ADVANCE program, the project will adapt and disseminate promising institutional practices for assisting women scientists and engineers in making this transition. The NPA will draw on successful models from both past ADVANCE programs as well as from the postdoctoral community, then adapt and promote them through various avenues. Please view the NPA ADVANCE Summary for more complete project details.
