E. PROGRAMS: PostdocTORAL Professional Development


1. Again, encourage use of research and career plan to track personal skill development and career milestone attainment in order to have more realistic understanding of abilities. Offer workshops/training on various tools to encourage their use.

 

2. Information for postdocs on how best to balance family and work obligations.

Examples:

  • Many ADVANCE programs offer workshops and luncheons on work-life balance, and some institutions also offer these through an employee assistance program. Postdocs can be encouraged to attend these, although a program that also acknowledges some of the unique challenges facing postdocs can be more effective.

 

3. Workshops on scientific writing, grant writing, etc.

4. Other workshops

  • University of California Davis Professors of the Future. A year-long fellowship program for outstanding grad students and postdocs who want to expand their skills set and marketability. During the year participants execute a project focused on the future challenges of graduate education, postdoctoral training or the academy.
  • CUNY Hunter College’s Gender Equity Program developed a series of professional development workshops for all junior faculty focused on providing tacit knowledge on topics such as negotiating author credit, student management, and self-presentation as well as approaches for fostering institutional diversity (see also [1]).
