C. POLICIES: General Policies

 

1. Make sure institutional resources are equitable, perhaps through institutional audits?

 

2. Encourage hiring from within, which can mitigate “two-body” geographical constraints as well as strengthen a postdoc’s “inside” knowledge. (See also: Programs: Funding & Grants)

 

3. Establish mentoring expectations for departments

Example:

  • Harvard School of Public Health distributes mentoring guidelines to faculty mentors and incoming postdocs

 

4. Provide institutional incentives for effective mentoring of postdocs, such as consideration during tenure and promotion review and mentoring awards
