LOOKING FOR RESOURCES TO BETTER SERVE YOUR POSTDOCS?
The NPA is here to help you serve your postdoc community; whether you are just getting started or you have an established and organized postdoc office or association. Academic institutions are the heart of where the vast majority of the postdoc population resides in the United States. This page details the resources available to assist your efforts.
Postdoctoral offices (PDO) are the institutional administrative homes for postdoctoral training and education. PDO administrators are the liaison between postdocs and their institution for creating and enforcing all postdoc policies. These policies include: appointment processes, assisting postdocs with mediation needs, working to meet the career development needs of postdocs and more.
Postdoc associations (PDA) are recognized groups that provide a unified voice to advocate for improvements with the administration at their institution. PDAs are a vibrant and dynamic source of support for postdoctoral scholars at their home institutions and nationally. They provide important networking and community building outlets for their postdoc community.
PDOs and PDAs are eligible to become Sustaining Members.
The NPA believes that appropriate training of the next generation of independent researchers requires that institutions set policies to encourage individual responsibility, foster effective mentoring, and recognize the value and contributions of postdoctoral scholars. The NPA recommends implementation of the following institutional policies and practices for postdoctoral training. For more information please view the Recommended Postdoc Policies & Practices page.
Our "Supporting the Needs of Postdocs: 2017 National Postdoctoral Association Institutional Policy Report" was written in collaboration with Sigma Xi and published in American Scientist. The report summarizes the results from a 2016 survey of 130 institutions that hire postdocs and hold NPA memberships. NPA members can also view the NPA Institutional Policy Database to view the survey data online and along with aggregate reports. NPA members can also view the NPA Institutional Policy Database which allows you to view the survey data online and view aggregate reports.
