Statement from the NPA

The National Postdoctoral Association (NPA) is saddened by the recent violent acts throughout our nation. In moments like this, when all of our communities are experiencing confusion, pain and emotional exhaustion, we encourage solidarity and sense of community, especially among our postdoctoral community and all of its supporters and allies.

The NPA has a serious and deep commitment to diversity. Our diversity statement highlights, “The National Postdoctoral Association seeks to promote diversity and ensure equal opportunity and inclusion for all postdocs in the membership, leadership and activities of the NPA regardless of race, ethnicity, sex, disability, national origin, socio-economic status, religion, sexual orientation, or gender identity.” In uncertain times, it is hard to imagine what we can do to help. However, one simple action is to work in solidarity with your own communities to speak out against injustice of all kinds.

The NPA is committed to fostering a more inclusive environment and will continue to engage, educate, and empower the postdoctoral community to address racial, gender, ethnic, religious, and all systematic forms of discrimination. In addition to our existing resources related to diversity, two webinars – the first discussing the importance of a diverse population to fostering innovation and creative solutions and a second addressing the issue of implicit bias – will be released as part of National Postdoc Appreciation Week (NPAW), September 19-23, 2016. Similarly, we plan to highlight issues related to enhancing diversity during the 2017 NPA Annual Meeting, March 17–19, 2017 in San Francisco, and encourage postdocs, postdoc offices, and postdoc associations to share lessons learned and outcomes of diversity-related efforts as a session proposal or poster during this event.
