The NPA is thrilled to share the recent announcement by the postdoctoral association (PDA) at Michigan State University that postdocs will be exempt from proposed salary cuts for the fall.

Upon learning of the proposed cuts, MSU’s postdoctoral community, with support from university faculty, formally objected to these measures. In a powerful letter that included over 400 signatures, the PDA outlined its objections to MSU's president, Samuel L. Stanley Jr., M.D., providing reasons why postdocs should be exempt from the salary cuts. The president agreed with the letter, exempting postdocs and academic staff with salaries under $50,000 from the salary cuts.

We applaud both MSU’s PDA for its efforts and advocacy on behalf of postdocs and Dr. Stanley for his insightful decision. We encourage other universities considering salary cuts in the wake of COVID-19 to look to MSU and follow the precedent it has set in exempting postdocs.
