The National Postdoctoral Association (NPA) Board of Directors today named Thomas P. Kimbis, Esq., as the organization’s new executive director and chief executive officer effective immediately.
“I am thrilled to lead the NPA and help advance its mission to improve the postdoctoral experience by promoting a culture of enhanced professional growth,” said Kimbis. “It is hard to imagine a time when the work of postdoctoral scholars -- from biologists to social scientists -- is more critical to tackle global challenges. As a society, we need to better recognize, understand and encourage the early-stage research that drives innovation, delivers groundbreaking solutions and helps power our economy -- work that is done by postdoctoral scholars. I am excited to be a part of a dynamic NPA team dedicated to the success of these scholars and the institutions that support them.”
Kimbis previously led a major trade association, multiple offices within the federal government, and a charitable and educational foundation. He brings years of experience serving as a liaison to the White House, building public-private partnerships, spearheading strategic planning, and engaging industry leadership. He has launched and led game-changing initiatives in areas as diverse as technical standards, energy policy, consumer protection, trade, stakeholder engagement, and political communications. He has appeared on national and local media outlets from FOX to NPR, is regularly quoted in the press, and is a published writer on nonprofit management and leadership.
“As we write this new chapter in the NPA’s history, we remain committed to our mission as we address pressing issues in the postdoctoral community. The Board is confident that Tom’s strategic vision, extensive experience, and innovative leadership will amplify the vital work of postdoctoral scholars and of the community of passionate, dedicated individuals who support them. We are delighted to welcome Tom, his fresh perspectives and bold approaches, to our team and we look forward to working with him to explore new opportunities in this time of transformation,” says Barbara J. Natalizio, Ph.D., chair of the Board of Directors.
Kimbis graduated with honors from Williams College with a Bachelor of Arts in political science, and from the University of Virginia with a Juris Doctor degree. He has earned certificates in leadership from the Brookings Institution and in management from the American Management Association. He currently serves as a trustee of Pickering Creek Audubon Center and on the Legal Advisory Council of the American Society of Association Executives.
