The National Postdoctoral Association (NPA) is currently seeking strong, dedicated individuals to serve as associate editors of The POSTDOCket. If you know someone who can fill this position (including yourself), let us know.

About The POSTDOCket

The POSTDOCket is the monthly newsletter of the NPA covering news items and features of interest to the postdoctoral community and its stakeholders. The POSTDOCket is managed by the POSTDOCket Committee, which consists of the associate editor team and graphics editor led by the editor in chief and deputy editor working in close collaboration with the NPA executive director and staff.

Responsibilities of an Associate Editor

The associate editors will work on a quarterly basis to prepare and review up to four articles for web publication. The associate editor will contact assigned authors and will edit content in the month that they work. The anticipated time commitment for the associate position is 8-10 hours once per quarter (once every three months).

  • Provide individual authors with guidance and editorial review
  • Propose articles and suggest prospective authors once per year or more, if desired
  • Work with authors and publishers to obtain reprint permissions, when necessary
  • Edit assigned articles to ensure compliance with style manual and editorial guidelines
  • Submit edited articles to editor in chief and deputy editor with recommendations on pull-quotes
  • Attend monthly half-hour Slack channel meetings and bi-annual phone meetings to provide input into editing process and suggestions for future articles or directions
  • Share published articles with authors and other stakeholders

Serving on The POSTDOCket Committee

The associate editor position is a great opportunity to develop editorial skills, expand professional networks, advance the mission of the NPA, and work with a wonderful group of colleagues from across the United States. Most business is accomplished via teleconference, email, and Slack channels. While no experience is needed, previous experience writing or editing would be a significant asset. Postdocs and administrators are encouraged to apply.

Eligibility is limited to Full Members of the NPA, including Sustaining Member representatives. If not a Full Member but interested in a position, visit the NPA website for membership details.

All interested persons must submit a one (1) page application statement, a one (1) page CV or resume, and a brief, non-technical writing sample (not exceeding 1,000 words). The application statement should include:
