The National Postdoctoral Association’s (NPA) eighth annual celebration of National Postdoc Appreciation Week (NPAW) was celebrated September 18 – 22, 2017.

Created with the goal of acknowledging the considerable contributions made by postdoctoral scholars (“postdocs”) to the research enterprise, NPAW is the nation’s largest celebration of postdocs. Organizations across the nation hold events throughout the week and across the country to create awareness of postdocs.

In 2017, 389 events were hosted at 114 institutions in 37 states, Asia and Oceania, Canada, Germany, and the United Kingdom. Events included a paint and sip event for University of California, Berkeley postdocs; a hike organized by the University of California, San Diego; yoga in the park and a bowling event at The University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center; and karaoke and Korean barbecue at the University of British Columbia. Other popular events included happy hours, receptions, seminars, ice cream socials, and scavenger hunts.

NPAW grew out of National Postdoc Appreciation Day, initially held September 24, 2009. In 2010, NPAW culminated with the passage of H.RES. 1545 by the U.S. House of Representatives. The resolution, which was passed on September 24, 2010, nationally recognized NPAW.

NPAW is coordinated by the NPA Outreach Committee, which works to promote the mission, values, goals, and business objectives of the NPA. In 2018, NPAW will be held September 17-21. For more information about NPAW and to view events across the nation, visit this page.
