I am currently a visiting scientist at the University of Toronto, having moved to Canada with my husband. Although British, I have not lived there since my graduate degree and feel that East coast Canada is a little closer to home!
Previously I was a postdoctoral scholar within the Museum of Vertebrate Zoology, University of California, Berkeley. Prior to this appointment I worked within the department of Environmental Science, Policy and Management at Berkeley and the department of Natural Resources and Environmental Science at the University of Nevada, Reno. I am a behavioural ecologist and my primary research addresses questions concerning the reproductive behavior of avian species. I have worked on passerine systems in the Negev desert in Israel, island populations in British Columbia, within oak savannah in central California and on parrotlets breeding in central Venezuela. My research is focused on parent-offspring conflict, communication, sibling competition, sexual selection and life-history trait variation. I am also concerned with how individual behavior affects population structure and viability and I am interested in further pursuing research that integrates measures of environmental variation with behavioral and population ecology.
I am a member of the Ecological Society of America, the British Ecological Society, the Association for the Study of Animal Behaviour, the International Society for Behavioral Ecology and the American Ornithological Union.
In addition to my research activities, I served the postdoc community as President of the Berkeley Postdoctoral Association from 2002 to 2004, was committee member on the UC Council of Postdoctoral Scholars and am an Executive Board member of the National Postdoc Association committees (below). This is a two year term that will end in December 2006.
