Workshops on Designing an Effective RCR Program
The goal of these workshops was to introduce the audience to topics and issues in the responsible conduct of research (RCR) that are most pertinent to postdocs, and present examples of successful programming models. Attendees were encouraged to consider models that could be adapted to their own institutions and would be attractive to their postdoc community. Presentation slides from each workshop are available below. These workshops were supported by the NPA's Bring RCR Home project.

The responsible conduct of research (RCR) encompasses a range of important skills, extending beyond simple misconduct to the challenges presented by the ethical ‘grey areas' in everyday research practice. Postdocs are faced with many such challenges unique to their position in the research enterprise, from understanding their role in supervising students to negotiating ownership of projects when transitioning to independence to navigating a U.S. research culture that may be new for many international postdocs. Incorporating training in RCR with other professional development topics can be an effective way to convey the importance of RCR while also increasing its appeal. This workshop will offer strategies and resources for creating such programs and tailoring them for your postdocs. A panel of seed grant awardees from the NPA's Bring RCR Home project will present on their supported programs, providing adaptable examples and lessons learned. From determining authorship on a postdoc’s first lab publication to taking ownership of data as the postdoc transitions to a faculty job, the responsible conduct of research is fundamental to a postdoc’s professional development and everyday research practice. Yet it can be challenging to design a training program on research integrity that is appealing to postdocs. This two-part workshop focuses on strategies and mechanisms for creating a dynamic training program for postdoctoral scholars on the responsible conduct of research (RCR). Learn how your institution can build a creative and engaging menu of RCR programs that will appeal to postdocs, while also imparting critical information and skills. Part I of the workshop begins with presentations on effective practices in RCR education and approaches for tailoring an RCR program to address the particular needs of postdocs and their career phase.

Part II of the workshop continues with a panel of Bring RCR Home 2007 seed grant awardees who will give an overview of their RCR programs and share lessons learned. Participants will also learn how to apply for NPA seed grants of $1000 to conduct RCR programs at their institutions and will be given favorable consideration in the 2008 seed grant competition.

However, many training programs focused on research integrity fail to attract an enthusiastic audience of postdoctoral scholars. This session will focus on strategies and mechanisms for creating a dynamic training program for postdoctoral scholars on the responsible conduct of research (RCR). Model programs and strategies will be highlighted.
