The NPA Board of Directors is an essential core for defining the mission of the NPA. Many NPA Board members are also active in outreach, mentoring, and professional development. Here are a few highlights from the first quarter of 2017.
Andrew Bankston, PhD, participated in Brain Days, a neuroscience outreach event for children age three to adults held March 24-25, 2017 at the Kentucky Science in Louisville, KY. He was also interviewed on April 5, 2017 for a series on training for diverse career paths.
Tullia Bruno, PhD, participated in an Innovation in Action session at the 15th NPA Annual Meeting in San Francisco, CA, on March 18, 2017. The session was titled “Communicating Science to Nonscientists—Conversing with Etiquette!”
Tracy Costello, PhD, delivered two presentations in February, one at Moffitt Cancer Center, Tampa, FL, and one at the 6th Presidential Career Symposium at MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, TX. Costello was also selected to participate in the Moffitt Cancer Center 2017-2018 Leadership Academy.
Josh Henkin, PhD, spoke at the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) Science and Technology Policy Fellowship 2017 Career Summit in Washington, DC, on January 10, 2017 about resumes and cover letter FAQs. Henkin also participated in the 6th Annual Presidential Career Symposium in Houston, TX, on February 16, 2017, presenting “Find Your Next Position with These Simple Job Search Strategies” and “Creating a Powerful Resume—Inside Tips From a PhD Hiring Manager.” At the AAAS 2017 Annual Meeting in Boston, MA, February 17-19, 2017, he delivered the presentation “Simple Strategies for Transitioning into a Non-academic”, sat on the panel “What They Didn’t Teach You in Grad School,” and participated as a mentor in “Speed Mentoring for Scientists.” On March 14-15, 2017, Henkin conducted two workshops at the Sanford Burnham Prebys Medical Discovery Institute in La Jolla, Ca: “Shred Your CV and Write a Resume—Inside Tips You Need to Hear from a PhD Hiring Manager” and “Leveraging LinkedIn—Attracting Recruiters and Finding the Best Jobs.” Henkin (on behalf of STEM Career Services) served as a career mentor at Career Connections at the 15th NPA Annual Meeting in San Francisco, CA, on March 17, 2017. On March 29, 2017, he delivered a workshop on strategic career planning for the EMPOWER, NSF Research Traineeship Program at Syracuse University in Syracuse, NY.
Barbara Natalizio, PhD, spoke at the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (NASEM) Board on Higher Education and Workforce Second Committee Meeting of the Revitalizing Graduate STEM Education for the 21st Century on Friday, March 24th in Washington, DC.
