A clearinghouse of promising practices

<< Prev | Table of Contents | Next >>

1. Programs to encourage broader access of postdocs to other institutional faculty, such as speaker series/luncheons with successful women, etc

  • University of Texas Southwestern’s Women in Science and Medicine Advisory Committee (WISMAC) sponsors a visiting professor each year which allows for networking opportunities especially for women.

  • University of Arizona ADVANCE program’s Distinguished Lecture series and Junior Lecture series bring senior and junior women to campus to give talks on their research.

2. Programs to share experiences and “tacit knowledge” (speakers, luncheons, etc.), providing examples and models for postdocs to share.

3. Workshops or resources for postdocs on how to network, how to attend conferences, how to take better advantage of professional networks

4. Networking or community building activities for postdocs, such as social events for postdocs or participating in a postdoc association

  • A number of institutions with active postdoc offices and postdoc associations hold such activities regularly, such as receptions, monthly luncheons, networking dinner series.

  • Hold events for National Postdoc Appreciation Week, which in 2010 was designated by Congress as starting the third Monday of September. See H.Res. 1545*.

5. Databases of postdoc individuals who are currently job searching
