California Berkeley The University of California, Berkeley will provide a luncheon for all postdocs on Thursday, September 20, 2012at 12:00 p.m. At this event, the Berkeley Postdoctoral Association will present the annual Faculty Award for Postdoctoral Mentoring ($3,000) to the selected faculty winner.
  Davis In appreciation of their contributions to the University of California, Davis, the Office of Graduate Studies and the Postdoctoral Scholar Association (PSA) would like to invite postdoctoral scholars to a welcome dinner at the Gunrock Pub on Monday, September 17, 2012. This is a great opportunity to meet other fellow postdocs and to get to know the PSA representatives and the Dean of Graduate Studies. They will also have information about campus resources and other events that will be taking place throughout the week.
  La Jolla Here are the details of the National Postdoc Appreciation Week events taking place at The Scripps Research Institute: The Career and Postdoctoral Services Office will host an open house in the Office's Resource Center with free donuts and coffee on Monday, September 17, 2012, and will sponsor free onsite seated massages for postdocs on Tuesday, September 18, 2012.

Scripps Research Institute's Career and Postdoctoral Services Office and Society of Fellows will hold the Institute's annual postdoc research symposium on Wednesday, September 19, 2012 when TSRI postdocs will be presenting some of the highest impact projects on campus. The symposium, taking place in the Beckman Center, will also feature two distinguished keynote speakers, an Outstanding Mentor Award for an exceptional postdoc advisor, and a raffle for prizes, including: two tickets to Disneyland, 15-minute massages, Scripps apparel, gift cards, and more.

Additionally, the Society of Fellows will also host a Happy Hour on Friday, September 21, 2012 to coincide with National Postdoc Appreciation Week.
    Sanford-Burnham Medical Research Institute will be holding a postdoc appreciation breakfast on Friday, September 21, 2012.  Postdocs on the La Jolla campus will be treated to a hot breakfast buffet, served by members of the Office of Training & Academic Services, International Office, and Human Resources.  The Sanford-Burnham CEO, Dr. John Reed, will join the postdocs at breakfast and share his thoughts regarding the important contributions of postdocs at Sanford-Burnham.
 

Los Angeles

The NPAW events at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, CA are as follows: On Tuesday,September 18, 2012, the Postdoctoral Scientist Program, Postdoc Society and Academic Human Resources are hosting an open house for the entire research community from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. to profile resources, and celebrate the achievements of Cedars-Sinai postdocs over the past year. Refreshments include a big cake to celebrate the Postdoc Society's 3rd Birthday!! Then on Thursday, September 20, 2012, Janine Bilsborough, Ph.D. (Head of IBD Drug Development at Cedars-Sinai) will give a presentation about Career Opportunities in Industry at 11:30 a.m.

Social events, including those with other LA area postdocs, are also planned.
   

L.A.-wide Postdoc Social: Postdocs from UCLA, Cedars-Sinai, Children's Hospital Los Angeles, Information Sciences Institute, House Research Institute, USC, Caltech, and City of Hope will meet at 7:00 p.m. at Weiland Brewery Underground in Downtown LA: 505 S Flower St, Suite #B-410, Los Angeles, CA 90071 for drinks, food and socializing.  Note: participants will have to pay for their own food and drink.

    The University of Southern California's Office of Postdoctoral Affairs and USC Postdoctoral Association will be celebrating National Postdoc Appreciation Week by hosting a number of events across Los Angeles. The Takara Bio Facebook page will be running an essay contest from Tuesday, September 18, 2012 through Friday, September 28, 2012. For the very first year, the Buck Institute for Research on Aging is officially celebrating NPAW, hosted by its newly formed PDA. Events include a banner on the Buck website, a special postdoctoral affairs meeting, and a blow-out barbeque for young and old. Sauce not included.
  San Diego The University of California, San Diego Office of Postdoctoral and Visiting Scholar Affairs will be hosting an Appreciation Day Luncheon on Tuesday, September 18, 2012 from 12:00 p.m. - 2:00 p.m. in the Price Center Ballroom East. Special guest speaker will be Professor Roger Tsien, Nobel Laureate in Chemistry. The University of California, San Diego Post-Doctoral Association will be sponsoring their 2nd Annual Vendor Fair on Wednesday, September 19, 2012 from 10:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. at SOM Liechtag Lawn. There will be prizes and lunch.
  San Francisco The J. David Gladstone Institutes will celebrate National Postdoc Appreciation week with a BBQ picnic on Tuesday, September 18, 2012.
    The University of California, San Francisco Postdoctoral Scholars Association (PSA) presents the 1st UCSF Postdoc Symposium, Thursday, September 20, 2012 from 9:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. at UCSF Mission Bay, Genentech Atrium and Auditorium. No registration fee to submit your abstract and there will beprizesfor best presentations. All postdocs are encouraged to participate. There will be free coffee, and lunch during the symposium.

Then, join the National Postdoc Appreciation Day celebration with free BBQ, music, and games from 5:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. at Koret Quad.
  Irvine The events planned for National Postdoc Appreciation Week at the University of California, Irvine:

PostDoc Appreciation Mixer: The UCI Postdoctoral Association (PDA) will be hosting an Appreciation Mixer at the University Club for all UCI Postdocs on Friday, September 21, 2012 from 4:30 p.m. - 7:30 p.m. This is a collaborative effort between the PDA, the Postdoc Union and the University Club to create a relaxed atmosphere outside of the lab to show appreciation for the role postdocs play. All PIs, mentors, family and friends are welcome to come and enjoy drinks, a special array of warm and cold appetizers, and the collegial company of your fellow researchers outside of the work environment.

Thursday, September 20, 2012 at 6:00 p.m. is the launch of PostDoc Pickup Games. Come to University Hills for the start of the Weekly Pickup Games. The event will start with Basketball, but every few months there will be a change to different sports. Do you need to know how to play? No! This is non-competitive. Come learn something new, meet other postdocs and relieve some of the stress from the lab.

Wednesday, September 19, 2012: Kick-off workshop on Non-Academic Career paths for PostDocs series. This is a multi-part series design to demystify the transition of academic postdocs into industry. Topics will include discipline-specific panel discussions with former postdocs who have made the switch to industry, workshops on translating academic research into a private venture, and practical how-to's like converting a CV to a Resume and setting up a consulting business while being a postdoc at UCI...

Lastly:  The UCI PSA is releasing their own UCI PDA website! www.sites.uci.edu/postdocs/.  At long last, they will have their own web-presence to keep UCI postdocs informed of upcoming events and help address any questions or concerns and direct them to all the resources at their disposal at UCI.

  Jupiter The Scripps Research Institute Career and Postdoctoral Services Office will host an open house in the Scripps Florida's Elizabeth M. Fago Library Postdoctoral Resource Center with free donuts and coffee on Tuesday, September 18, 2012 and will sponsor free onsite seated massages for postdocs on Wednesday, September 19, 2012.

The Career and Postdoctoral Services Office and the Kellogg School of Science and Technology will be thanking postdocs with a new networking event titled, "Connecting Emerging Leaders in the Life Sciences (CELLS)" on Thursday, September 20, 2012 from 5:30 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. The event will unite the growing life sciences community in and around Palm Beach County, Florida and will allow postdocs to network with potential employers.

Lastly, the Society of Research Fellows at Scripps Florida will be hosting a Pizza and Movie night on Friday, September 21, 2012 as a finale to National Postdoctoral Appreciation Week.
  Miami The University of Miami Postdoctoral Programs Office will host their Annual Postdoctoral Fellows Research Day on Tuesday, September 18, 2012 to celebrate National Postdoc Appreciation Week. The event will feature a poster session from 11:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. in the Schoninger Research Quadrangle which will offer postdocs a great opportunity to practice their presentation skills, share their research, and learn about their colleagues' work. The University will also recognize the significant scientific contributions our postdocs make every day to our advance research through a social filled with food, drinks, and fun at the University Restaurant and Patio from 4:00 p.m.to 6:00 p.m.
  Tampa The Moffitt Postdoctoral Association at the Moffitt Cancer Center in Tampa will again host a family friendly movie night on Wednesday, September 19, 2012. A classic comedy will be screened and a variety of movie snacks will be available for attendees. Moffitt postdocs, their families and USF postdocs are invited to attend. On Friday, September 21, 2012 a breakfast reception honoring Moffitt postdocs will be held; attendees will enjoy coffee and bagels and participate in a drawing for door prizes.
    The University of South Florida is having a Postdoc Welcome Happy Hour on Thursday, September 20, 2012 from 5:30 p.m. - 8:00 p.m.
  Orlando The Sanford-Burnham Lake Nona campus celebrated National Postdoc Appreciation Week a week early.  On Wednesday, September 12, 2012, the Sanford-Burnham Office of Training & Academic Services held a leadership workshop for postdocs, and on Thursday, September 13, 2012, the Office of Training & Academic Services and the International Office treated Lake Nona postdocs to a hot breakfast buffet as a small token of appreciation for all that they have done to help the Lake Nona campus grow.

Illinois Argonne This year, Argonne National Laboratory is celebrating NPAW with their 5th Annual Postdoctoral Research Symposium and 2nd Annual Postdoctoral Career Fair. These events are truly a celebration of postdoctoral research accomplishments and recognition that part of their job is to find a job. Postdocs from Argonne and regional universities will have a chance to network, socialize and hopefully land that coveted "permanent position."
  Champaign The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign is having a reception for postdoctoral scholars on Thursday, September 20, 2012.
  Chicago The University of Illinois at Chicago will be hosting the following events: Thursday, September 20, 2012 at 12:00 p.m. at GEMS Suite, a postdoc appreciation lunch hosted by Dr. Mitra Dutta, Vice Chancellor for Research. Also on Thursday, September 20, 2012 in the MBRB Auditorium at 5:00 p.m., there will be a screening of "PhD The Movie," followed by a meet and greet reception. This event will take place at 900 S. Ashland (enter on Marshfield).
    The University of Chicago Postdoctoral Association is planning the following events this fall to occur around National Postdoc Appreciation Week. Friday September 7, 2012 is the Postdoctoral Association Annual Fall Kick-Off Picnic at 4:00 p.m. on the Science Quad. On Thursday, October 25, 2012 is the 2nd annual University of Chicago Postdoctoral Symposium. The symposium will featuring guest speakers Dr. Philip S. Clifford who will lead a career development workshop and Dr. Timothy J. Ley who will offer a keynote address, a lunch, postdoc talks, a poster session and an awards ceremony.

The University of Chicago Postdoctoral Association will also host an Ice Cream Social open to all postdocs on Friday, September 21, 2012 at 4:00 p.m. on the Crerar Lawn.
  Evanston On Saturday, September 15, 2012, the Office of Postdoctoral Affairs and The Graduate School of Northwestern University will host a picnic for the postdoctoral population in celebration of National Postdoc Appreciation Week (NPAW) along the Lakefront of the Evanston campus. This recognition of the contributions made by our postdocs will include food, field games, giveaways, a photo booth and our first ever Postdoc Relay Race. Postdocs and their guests, as well as faculty members and administrators working in the humanities, social sciences, natural and physical sciences, biomedical sciences, engineering, mathematics, communications, education and social policy, management and civic engagement will be in attendance.
Indiana Bloomington The Indiana University School of Medicine will celebrate NPAW by serving coffee and desserts from 3:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday, September 18, 2012. Join them in Medical Science, Daly 186.
  Indianapolis The Indiana University School of Medicine Postdoctoral Office in Indianapolis, IN is having a reception for postdoctoral scholars on Tuesday, September 17, 2012.
Iowa Iowa City In celebration of National Postdoc Appreciation Week, the University of Iowa Graduate College Office of Postdoctoral Scholars and the University of Iowa Postdoctoral Association, co-sponsored by the Carver College of Medicine, will host a pizza party from 4:00 p.m. - 5:30 p.m. on Monday, September 17, 2012for all UI postdoctoral scholars and fellows in the EMRB Atrium. Meet and mingle with your colleagues. Registration is required. On Tuesday, September 18, 2012, postdoctoral scholars are invited to participate in Speaking for Success, a workshop presented by Paul Casella. Kansas Kansas City The University of Kansas Medical Center (KUMC) is hosting a luncheon for its postdoctoral scholars on Tuesday, September 18, 2012.
  Lawrence The University of Kansas Postdoctoral Association (KPA) is sponsoring a postdoc appreciation event on Monday September 17, 2012.Postdocs will meet over the lunch hour to enjoy trivia, prizes, and treats provided by the KPA.

The University of Louisville held its 4th annual postdoc appreciation luncheon on Thursday September 13, 2012. The early date was to avoid a scheduling conflict with the Institutional “Research!Louisville” event. Postdocs from around the campus were invited to the luncheon, which was catered by “Upper Crust” of Louisville. Dr. Marcia Cole, a recently hired Assistant Professor in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, was invited to speak about the transition from post-doc to permanent position and how postdocs could prepare now for this next step in their professional career. There were door prizes and each postdoc received a canvas University of Louisville tote bag.
Louisiana Baton Rouge Pennington Biomedical Research Center is hosting an appreciation luncheon for its postdocs and hosting a reception for postdocs attending the annual Meeting of The Obesity Society in San Antonio, TX.
Maine    
Maryland Baltimore The University of Maryland, Baltimore will celebrate National Postdoc Appreciation Week by hosting a networking breakfast for postdocs and their faculty advisors from 9:00 a.m.-11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, September 18, 2012 in HSF II 600. On Friday, September 21, 2012 UMB will also kickoff a new monthly research seminar series that provides postdocs the opportunity to showcase their work to fellow postdocs across disciplinary boundaries.
    The Johns Hopkins PDA has several events planned to recognize National Postdoc Appreciation Week this year, including the annual Postdoc Appreciation BBQ on Wednesday, September 19, 2012from 4:30 p.m. - 6:30 p.m. They've also arranged for a number of businesses both on- and off-campus to offer discounts to postdocs during the week ranging from reduced prices on certain food/beverage items to 10-20% discounts on purchases. Additionally, there will be a Minority Postdoc Alliance (MPA) meeting/happy hour on Tuesday, September 18, 2012from 4:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. and there will be a few promotional giveaways in collaboration with some other organizations on campus.
  Bethesda Join the National Cancer Institute CCR FYI for free ice cream on Wednesday, September, 19, 2012 from 2:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.! Ice cream will be served on the bldg 37 patio (between bldg 37 and bldg 40).
Massachusetts Boston Boston University has planned two events for the National Postdoc Appreciation Week: On Tuesday, September 18, 2012 from 1:00 p.m. - 3:30 p.m. an ice cream social takes place on Talbot Green BU School of Medicine, 72 East Concord St., Boston, MA 02118. Then on Thursday, September 20, 2012 from 5:30 p.m. - 7:50 p.m. a screening of the movie, Losing Control, and after the movie screening a panel discussion in 670 Albany Street Auditorium, Boston, MA 02118.
    The NPAW events scheduled at Harvard Medical School/Harvard School of Dental Medicine Office for Postdoctoral Fellows are as follows: a Postdoc Research Day on Tuesday, September 18, 2012, from 12:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m. at Elements Cafe, Joseph B. Martin Conference Center, 77 Avenue Louis Pasteur. Hot Talks happens on Wednesday, September 19, 2012, from 12:00 p.m. - 2:00 p.m. Finally on Thursday, September 20, 2012, an Appreciation & Awards Reception is scheduled.     In celebration of National Postdoc Appreciation Week, the Harvard School of Public Health's Office of Faculty Affairs and Postdoctoral Association (PDA) will host a reception for postdocs and mentors on Friday, September 21, 2012 from 3:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m.in the Kresge cafeteria.   Stony Brook During this year's 2012 National Postdoc Appreciation Week Stony Brook University will be holding its first Postdoctoral Research Symposium, a full-day event that is being planned and expedited by SBU's Office of Postdoctoral Affairs (OPA) along with an organizing committee made up of volunteer SBU Postdocs. The Postdoc symposium participants will not only be from Stony Brook but also from neighboring Brookhaven National Laboratory and Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory. Faculty, staff and local employers will be invited to attend.

On Thursday, September 20, 2012from 9:30 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. postdocs will be presenting their research to a general audience in 10-minute intervals throughout the morning. The break for lunch will coincide with a poster review session during which time attendees will be asked to vote for the best poster in three different categories. Directly after lunch there will be a keynote speaker followed by the poster award presentations and closing remarks.

This event was conceived by SBU's Postdoc Working Group, which is made up of volunteer Postdocs and is led by the Assistant Dean for Postdoctoral Affairs. The group meets monthly to discuss Postdoc issues and plan Postdoc events. The group's main impetus for the Research Symposium is to share ideas and research with colleagues on campus along with those Postdocs at the two research laboratories that logistically straddle SBU. The group also thinks it is important to practice communicating science to a non-discipline specific audience as well as have the opportunity to network in a supportive, Postdoc-friendly environment.

In honor of National Postdoc Appreciation Week, the Office of Postdoctoral Services and the postdoctoral association of Virginia Commonwealth University will host a postdoctoral scholar poster session on Wednesday, September 19, 2012 from 11:30 a.m. - 1:30 p.m. The poster session will be held in the Jonah L. The Postdoctoral Assembly at the Society of Toxicology will kickoff National Postdoctoral Appreciation Week with a greeting to all postdocs by PDA President William Slikker and the publication of blogs by postdocs from academia, government and industry. Two former postdocs will also blog about their restrospective view of their postdoc experiences. The SOT homepage will also post special greetings to SOT postdocs throughout the week. The highlight of the week will be a webinar on Thursday, September 20, 2012 entitled “Finding Funding for Early Career Scientists” by Donna Vogel, M.D., Ph.D., currently the Director of the Professional Development Office of Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions and former program director at NIH. While the events emanate from SOT Headquarters in Reston, they are “virtual” events reaching out via email, web and WebEx to our widely-dispersed community of SOT postdocs across the US and overseas.

On Monday, September 17, 2012 as a kick-off to National Postdoc Appreciation Week (NPAW), the OPA and Graduate Career Development will present: "Leveraging Social Media in Your Career Development." Get an introduction to the use of popular social media outlets such as LinkedIn, Facebook, and Twitter. Learn key tips on using these resources in developing a consistent and professional online presence and bolstering your job search efforts. The Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center will be having a party for postdocs in our Helix Cafe on Friday, September 21, 2012. Our Center President and Director, Larry Corey, will say words of welcome and appreciation for our postdocs.
    The University of Washington Postdoctoral Association (UWPA) will be hosting a barbeque lunch for Seattle area postdocs in the main campus on the deck between Bagley Hall (BAG), Chemistry Building (CHB) and Okanogan Lane on Tuesday, September 18, 2012 from 1:00 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. This will be a great opportunity for postdocs to network and to learn more about upcoming events of UWPA.
