Alabama

Birmingham The University of Alabama at Birmingham hosted a catered luncheon on Tuesday, September 20, 2011 from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and various prizes from local establishments were given away during the event. Additionally, the week will end with a seminar at 12:00 p.m. from an individual involved in Science Policy.

Berkeley The University of California, Berkeley will host a lunch on Wednesday, September 21, 2011 to celebrate National Postdoc Appreciation Week.
  San Francisco The J. David Gladstone Institutes will celebrate National Postdoc Appreciation week with a BBQ picnic on Tuesday, September 20, 2011.
  Los Angeles
Cedars-Sinai Medical Center will be hosting an open house event for the entire research community on Tuesday, September 20, 2011 to celebrate the contributions and achievements of Cedars-Sinai postdocs and profile resources for research, career development and life in general.Cedars-Sinai will also be host Laura Hoopes, professor and author of "Breaking Through the Spiral Ceiling" at Cedars-Sinai on Thursday, September 22, 2011 for a lunchtime seminar.
  San Francisco The University of California, San Francisco's (UCSF) Postdoctoral Scholar's Association will be holding a BBQ event on the Quad at UCSF's Mission Bay campus on Thursday, September 22, 2011 from 5-7pm. We will serve dinner, snacks, desserts and drinks. We will also feature a UCSF postdoc vs. faculty scrimmage soccer match.
  La Jolla
Scripps Research Institute’s Career and Postdoctoral Services Office and Society of Fellows will hold the Institute’s annual postdoc research symposium on Wednesday, September 21, 2011 when TSRI postdocs will be presenting some of the highest impact projects on campus.  The symposium, taking place in the Beckman Center, will also feature two distinguished keynote speakers, a new Outstanding Mentor Award for an exceptional postdoc advisor, and a raffle for prizes, including: two tickets to Disneyland, 15-minute massages, Scripps apparel, gift cards, and more.  The Society of Fellows will also host a Happy Hour to coincide with National Postdoc Appreciation Week.
  San Diego The University of California, San Diego (UCSD) will be hosting a luncheon on Thursday, September 22, 2011 from 12 p.m.- 2 p.m. at the Price Center Ballroom East. This event will feature a welcome address by the Chancellor, keynote address and interactive exercise on networking, postdoc bingo, and raffle prizes!
  Los Angeles
The Postdoctoral Associations and Training offices of City of Hope,Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, Keck School of Medicine of USC and Caltech invite you to celebrate with your fellow postdocs at Barney’s Beanery (99 E. Colorado Blvd) on Wednesday, September 21, 2011 from 6:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m.
  Los Angeles There will be several events hosted by the University of Southern California to celebrate National Postdoc Appreciation Week: Monday, September 19, 2011coffee and pastries will be served at Seaver Courtyard, HSC from 3:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. On Wednesday, September 21, 2011 from 12:00 p.m. – 1:00 p.m. a postdoc lunch mixer takes place at the Engineering Quad, Archimedes Plaza, UPC.  From 6:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. at Barney’s Beanery (99E Colorado Blvd, Pasadena, CA 91105) an L.A.-WIDE POSTDOC NETWORKING EVENT hosted by USC, Caltech, City of Hope and Cedars Sinai will take place.  This features free food, free games of pool, and free non-alcoholic beverages.  On Thursday, September 22, 2011 enjoy an ice cream social at Seaver Courtyard, HSC from 3:00 p.m. - 4:30 p.m.  And finally on Saturday, September 24, 2011 go hiking in Griffith Park from 3:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m.

On Monday, September 19, 2011 a Postdoc Awards Ceremony will be held.  An Ice Cream Social for Postdocs takes place on Tuesday, September 20, 2011Cafeteria specials recognizing Postdocs will be available all week.  Finally on Thursday, September 22, 2011 a Postdoc Seminar will take place.
  Stanford The Office of Postdoctoral Affairs at Stanford University will sponsor events in appreciation of all that Postdocs contribution to research and discovery at Stanford including a Celebrate Postdocs Barbecue & Social:  A barbecue inviting the ~1900 postdocs their families, faculty, Administrator staff, and support departments and resources from career development to Work/Life.  Also enjoy a New Postdoc Welcome & Social:  a welcome event to New Postdocs at Stanford in 2011 and representation and participation from all the support services offered to Postdocs as well as lead representatives from various Postdoc-run organizations at Stanford such as the Stanford University Postdoc Association, etc.
Colorado Denver The Postdoctoral Association at the University of Colorado Denver, Anschutz Medical Campus is holding "The Postdoctoral Fellow Appreciation Mentor/Mentee Brunch" on Tuesday, September 20, 2011 from 9 a.m. -11 a.m. The brunch will be catered by a local company and will include both hot and cold breakfast entrees.  Invitations will be mailed to postdocs via campus mail.  All postdocs are encouraged to invite their mentors and R.S.V.P. for both.

Delaware Newark As part of National Postdoc Appreciation Week, a reception honoring the University of Delaware’s postdoctoral researchers will be held Monday, September 19, 2011 at the Roselle Center for the Arts.

Florida Miami The University of Miami Postdoctoral Programs Office will host their Annual Postdoctoral Fellows Research Day on Friday, September 23, 2011 to celebrate National Postdoc Appreciation Week. The event will feature a poster session from 11:30 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. in the Schoninger Research Quadrangle which will offer postdocs a great opportunity to practice their presentation skills, share their research, and learn about their colleagues’ work. The University will also recognize the significant scientific contributions our postdocs make every day to our advance research through a social filled with food, drinks, and fun at the University Restaurant and Patio from 4 p.m. - 6 p.m.
  Jupiter Scripps Florida and the Society of Research Fellows will be thanking postdocs with an Ice Cream Social & Raffle Drawing on Tuesday, September 20, 2011 from 12:30 p.m. - 2:00 p.m. Postdocs can enjoy delicious Kilwin’s Ice Cream while they learn more about the Scripps Florida Society of Research Fellows and how they can get involved.

The Moffitt Postdoctoral Association will host a private screening of “The PHD Movie” based on the webcomic “Piled Higher and Deeper” on Wednesday, September 21, 2011.  Postdocs and their families are invited to attend.  Movie style snacks and sodas will be provided.  Postdoctoral fellows from the University of South Florida are invited to attend.

In addition to the Movie Night on Wednesday, the MPDA is hosting a New Postdoc Welcome Reception on Thursday, September 22, 2011.  Please stop by for some cake, soda and fun! Winners of the skills games will receive a $5 Starbucks gift card & there will be a drawing for a $20 Target card. The reception takes place at the David Murphey Conference Room in the Stabile Research Building from 2:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m.

  Tallahassee The Postdoctoral Career Development Program at Florida State University will host a "Career Preparedness and Job Search" workshop in honor of National Postdoc Appreciation Week.
Georgia Athens The University of Georgia Postdoctoral Association (UGA-PDA) is holding a career workshop on September 23, 2011 to appreciate the contribution of postdocs in research and teaching. There will be speakers representing academia, industry, military and government (USDA).
  Atlanta In honor of National Postdoc Appreciation Week, Emory University School of Medicine, Office of Postdoctoral Education (OPE) and the Postdoctoral Association Committee will be hosting a couple of events: An ice cream social on Tuesday, September 20, 2011 from 12:00 p.m. – 1:00 p.m., in the James B. Williams Education Building, Room 153ADr. Mary DeLong, OPE Director will be scooping ice cream and Postdoc Association Committee Chairs adding your toppings as they tell you about their committee.  It’s a “Postdoc Committee Rush” and you also get a sweet treat.  The Biomedical Career Symposium, held by The Partnership of Academia and Industry, will take place Thursday, September 22, 2011 from 1:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. at the James B. Williams Medical Education Building, Auditorium 110.  End the day with an  OPE Postdoc Appreciation Reception at 5:00 p.m.
  Atlanta Morehouse School of Medicine will start off NPAW with a Kickoff ReceptionMonday, September 19, 2011 from 12:00 p.m. – 1:00 p.m. at the Louis W. Sullivan National Center for Primary Care—E. Ginger Sullivan Atrium.  Following the reception attend “From Postdoc to Professional” to gain insights into transitioning from a postdoctoral position.  Dr. David J. Katz, Dr. Mark E. Lee, Dr. Fred Meadows, Dr. Moiz Mumtaz and Dr. An Zhou will lead the discussion being held in Room 124 at the Louis W. Sullivan National Center for Primary Care.  On Tuesday, September 20, 2011 join your fellow postdocs in Room 225 at the Louis W. Sullivan National Center for Primary Care to hear tips on what it takes to find and land a job during “Getting Hired,” lead by Dr. Jeremy M. Boss, professor and chair in the Dept. of Microbiology and Immunology at Emory University School of Medicine.  Finally, on Thursday, September 22, 2011 at 3:00 p.m. take part in the 2nd Annual Postdocs vs. The P.I.s Softball Game.  The game will be held at The Villages at Carver Family YMCA, 1600 Pryor Road, Atlanta, GA 30315.

Illinois Champaign The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign will host a reception for postdoctoral scholars on Thursday, September 22, 2011 from 4 p.m. - 6 p.m. The reception will be held at the Levis Faculty Center and is organized by the Postdoctoral Affairs Office.
  Chicago The Postdoctoral Association (PDA) in the Biological Sciences Division at The University of Chicago will host an ice-cream social in honor of NPAW.
  Argonne The Postdoctoral Programs Office and the Postdoctoral Society of Argonne (the PDA) at Argonne National Lab have the following NPAW events scheduled:

A Postdoc Appreciation Picnic on Wednesday, September 21, 2011.  On Thursday, September 22, 2011 join the Lab Director for a Town Hall Meeting.  Finally on Friday, September 23, 2011 a "Negotiation and Decision-Making Postdoc" workshop will be held.
  Chicago The University of Illionis at Chicago Postdoctoral Association (PDA) invites all postdocs to come and meet Dr. Joe ‘Skip’ Garcia, Vice Chancellor for Research, Dr. Mark  Rasenick, UIC Postdoc Association’s Faculty Advisor, PDA executive  councilmembers and College Reps during a lunch reception. Maine Scarborough The Research Fellow Association at the Maine Medical Center Research Institute is hosting a cake & ice-cream special for everybody at their institute during National Postdoc Appreciation Week.  The event will take place on Friday, September, 23, 2011 from 3:30 p.m. - 5:00 p.m.

  Bethesda Celebrate with the National Institutes of Health on Tuesday, September 20, 2011 from 3:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. on the lawn in front of Building 1. Join Scientific Directors, IC Training Directors, OITE, and FelCom for an ice cream social, a photo, and information for postdocs and clinical fellows about resources and ways to get involved on the NIH campus.   Family Photos will be taken at 3:30 p.m.

The John Hopkins Postdoctoal Association is holding their National Postdoc Appreciation Week BBQ on Thursday, September 22, 2011 in the Turner Courtyard from 5:30 p.m. – 7:30 p.m.  This event is FREE for all SOM Postdocs, pre-paid guests to the event are $5 per person.  Join JHPDA for a fun evening with FREE food, drinks, games, live DJ and more!  Vegetarian and meat options are available.  Action for Japan will be selling raffle tickets with great prizes including a night in the Sheraton and amazing gift vouchers, all proceeds going to help with the earthquake and tsunami recovery efforts.  Raindate for this event is Friday, September 23, 2011.

Massachusetts Boston Brigham and Women’s Hospital’s Office for Research Careers and the BWH Postdoc Leadership Council will host a number of events, beginning with giveaways at the Research Connection LIVE Lunch on Monday, September 19, 2011.  On Tuesday, September 20, 2011 the Postdoc Leadership Council will host a Pub Night.  Check your e-mail for the launch of the new postdoc Industry Experience Program, on Wednesday, September 21, 2011.  On Thursday, September 22, 2011 cool down at the ice cream social.  There will be raffles, games, giveaways and information tables.  End NPAW by checking your e-mail for the announcement of the Research Photo Contest winners on Friday, September 23, 2011. Postdocs can submit cool research photos/images, and the community will vote online.  The Grand prize winner will receive an iPod shuffle.
 

The Office of Fellowship Training (OFT) at Children's Hospital Boston will host three events: On Thursday, September 22, 2011 a Fellows’ Appreciation Luncheon will be held from 12 p.m. – 1 p.mCarleen Brunelli, PhD, MBA (VP of Research Administration) and Jordan Kreidberg, MD, PhD (Director of Office of Fellowship Training) will give the welcome address.  Postdoc Silva Krause will be honored for being selected as a Postdoctoral Scholar Research Integrity Ambassador to the Quest for Research Excellence 2011 Conference.  September 20th will also be the introduction of the newly forming Postdoc Association, piloted by Silva Krause and Nader Ghasemlou, both graduates of the OFT-sponsored leadership training series.

An Introduction to the HMS Ombuds office and presentation on Effective Negotiation Skills will take place on Wednesday, September 21, 2011 from 12 p.m. - 1:30 p.m.  The presentation, held in the Karp 10th floor conference room, will be led by Melissa Brodrick from the HMS Ombuds office and lunch is included.  And finally enjoy a screening of “The PhD Movie” on Friday, September 23, 2011 from 5:00 p.m. - 6:30 p.m.  This event is co-sponsored by Joslin Diabetes Center’s Research Fellows Council Postdoc Association.  For more information on OFT's events please visit here.

 

The Dana-Farber Postdoc and Graduate Student Affairs Office (PGSAO) will kick off Postdoc Appreciation Week on Monday, September 19, 2011 with an afternoon reception with leaders, Dr. Edward Benz (President of Dana Farber), Dr. Barrett Rollins (Chief Scientific Officer) and Beverly Ginsburg-Cooper (Vice President of Research Administration).  There will be refreshments served and speeches given by each of the leaders followed by casual networking and a chance to speak one-on-one with the speakers.  On Tuesday, September 20, 2011 there will be a Postdoc and Graduate Student Association (PGA) Coffee Hour. PGA leadership will be on-hand to talk about the committees that make up the PGA and how one can join to become more involved in this leadership group.  Coffee and bagels will be served.  On Thursday, September 22, 2011 we have our annual ice cream social in the Smith Family Room.  All postdocs and graduate students are invited to cool off at this favorite event of the week.  On Friday, September 23, 2011 PGSAO along with the PGA, will host the institute's 7th Annual Postdoc and Graduate Student Retreat.  This day-long event will feature two keynote speakers, Dr. Robert Weinberg from MIT, and Dave Jensen, Science Careers Columnist, along with posters sessions, oral presentations, raffle prizes and an awards ceremony and cocktail reception in which winners of the 2 best oral presentations and 2 best posters will be awarded with $1,000 travel awards.

 
In celebration of National Postdoc Appreciation Week, the Harvard School of Public Health's Office of Faculty Affairs and Postdoctoral Association (PDA) will host a reception for postdocs and mentors on Thursday, September 22, 2011 from 3:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m.in the Kresge cafeteria. The Office of Postdoctoral Affairs at Boston University School of Medicine, Division of Graduate Medical Sciences will celebrate National Postdoc Appreciation Week by organizing their first ice cream social.  Join them Monday, September 19, 2011 from 3:00 p.m. – 4:30 p.m. at Talbot Green located at 72 East Concord Street.  
 
At Harvard Medical School NPAW starts with Hot Talks of 2011 on Tuesday, September 20, 2011.  Held from 12:00 p.m. - 1:00 p.m. in the Cannon Room, Building C, postdocs can enjoy a pizza lunch and hear about the exciting, innovative research being done by their fellow postdocs.  The 1st annual Postdoc Research Day follows on Wednesday, September 21, 2011.  A poster session featuring the work of postdocs from HMS & HSDM will occur, with faculty and staff judging the posters and giving $500 travel awards for excellent poster presentations!  Attend this event from 4:30 p.m. - 6:00 p.m. at Courtyard Cafe, Warren Alpert BuildingDr. William Chin, Executive Dean for Research, HMS is the keynote speaker for “Academic-Industry Interactions: New Frontiers” being held at the Armenise Amphitheater.  After the address by Dr. Chin, a reception will follow in Modell Atrium where the winners of the travel awards for best posters will be announced.  This event takes place on Thursday, September 22, 2011 from 4:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m. Completing the week will be Dave Jensen, Columnist for AAAS Science Careers, speaking on “Secrets of the Recessionary Job Market: How Employment Works in a Down Economy.” This event will be in the Pfizer Lecture Hall Friday, September 23, 2011 from 2:30 p.m. - 4:00 p.m. For more details on the Harvard Medical School Office for Postdoctoral Fellows events please visit here.  
  Woods Hole In honor of NPAW the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution and the Woods Hole Postdoc community will treat all Woods Hole based postdocs and postdoc sponsors/advisors and their families to appetizers, salads, pizza, refreshments and games on Thursday, September 22, 2011.  The event will take place at 4:00 p.m. on the McKee Field (behind the Clark Building on WHOI's Quissett Campus).  In the case of rain, the event will move the picnic inside to Carriage House.  
  Boston The Massachusetts General Hospital Office for Research Career Development (ORCD), in conjunction with the Mass General Postdoc Association (MGPA) is hosting a BBQ for MGH postdocs to celebrate National Postdoc Appreciation week. The BBQ will be held on Wednesday, September 21, 2011.  
Michigan Ann Arbor Join the University of Michigan in celebrating National Postdoc Appreciation Week with its Fall picnic on Thursday, September 22, 2011! This is a great event that all postdocs and their families are invited to. Drop in any time between 4-7 pm. Come out and enjoy the food and drinks provided by the Postdoc Association and the Office of Postdoctoral Studies.
  East Lansing The Michigan State PDO and PDA are celebrating National Postdoctoral Week by hosting a Network Lunch and Information Fair on Tuesday, September 20, 2011 from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the International Center of MSU.

Missouri St. Louis Washington University in St. Louis will host a Postdoc Appreciation Coffee Monday, September 19, 2011 at 9:30 a.m. and a Postdoc-PI Happy Hour Wednesday, September 21, 2011 at 4:00 p.m. Both events will be in the Hearth Room, Farrell Learning and Teaching Center at the Washington University School of Medicine. All Washington University postdocs and their faculty advisors are invited to attend!  The events are sponsored by The Office of Postdoctoral Affairs and the WU Postdoc Society.
Montana Hamilton On Thursday, September 22, 2011 join the NIH/NIAID Rocky Mountain Lab for cake at 3:00 p.m.
Nebraska Lincoln The University of Nebraska - Lincoln will once again host a National Postdoc Appreciation Week reception on Thursday, September 22, 2011 from 5:30 p.m. - 7:30 p.m. at the Van Brunt Visitors Center. Postdocs, PI's, faculty, and administrators are invited to attend.

New Hampshire Hanover Dartmouth College will have a reception for postdocs, their advisors, and grad students on Wednesday, September 21, 2011 from 5:00 p.m. - 6:30 p.m., as thanks for all postdocs do. Information about the Dartmouth College Postdoctoral Association (DCPDA), the Dartmouth Center for Advancement of Learning (DCAL), and outreach opportunities will be available.
New Jersey Piscataway

The University of Medicine & Dentistry of New Jersey/Rutgers Postdoctoral Association would like to invite postdocs, faculty advisors and graduate students to the 3rd Annual National Postdoc Appreciation Day Symposium. The symposium will include “Scientific Talks by Postdocs,” a poster session, “Breakout Career Development Panel Sessions,” and talks by various speakers.

Taking place from 9 a.m. – 6 p.m. on Thursday, September 22, 2011, the event will be held at the RWJMS-UMDNJ Research Tower, West Lecture Hall; Busch Campus, Piscataway, NJ.

Stony Brook University will host multiple events for NPAW.  On Tuesday, September 20, 2011 a luncheon will be arranged by the Center for Inclusive Education at which minority postdocs will break bread with the Center's graduate students to discuss everything from mentoring opportunities to post-graduate career advice.  On Thursday, September 22, 2011 the Office of Postdoctoral Affairs will  sponsor "What To Do With a PhD" where a panel of seven Stony Brook alumni will share the trials and tribulations of their post-postdoc journeys as they moved from life at the bench to a wide range of non-traditional career paths.  The panel members represent the gamut of job opportunities from law to finance to community college teaching to science writing. The event will be followed by a dinner reception where panelists can mingle with and answer personal questions from event attendees.

The Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation (OMRF) will celebrate its first year of participation in NPAW with an Appreciation Lunch and Award Ceremony on Wednesday, September 21st, 2011.  The catered lunch will be held from 12 p.m. - 1 p.m. and will include a presentation for Outstanding Paper of the Year to one of their distinguished postdoctoral scholars.

Pennsylvania Philadelphia The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) will be hosting two special guest speakers for National Postdoc Appreciation Week. Derek Haseltine (Director, Research Career Development, University of Maryland) will join us on Tuesday, September 20, 2011 to discuss ways to "Re-Energize Your Career." Dick Woodward, Ph.D. (CEO, Vascular Magnetics, Inc.), will be on hand on Thursday, September 22, 2011 to instruct fellows on “Entering the Business Side of Scientific Industries.”

In addition, CHOP postdocs will be treated to free morning coffee on September 20 and 22, 2011, with giveaways and raffles from the Office of Postdoctoral Affairs.  A Finger Food and Wine Reception will also be held on the afternoon of Thursday, September 22, 2011.

  Arlington The National Science Foundation and the NPA will hold a "Leading Innovation and Discovery" workshop from Monday, September 19, 2011 through Tuesday, September 20, 2011, at the National Science Foundation.
Washington Richland For the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, NPAW won’t end on the 23rd!  On Tuesday, September 27, 2011 the Associate Lab Director for Fundamental and Computational Sciences will speak on the importance of the work done by postdocs.  PNNL will also introduce their new Linus Pauling Distinguished Postdoctoral Fellows and Wiley Postdoctoral Fellows, along with recognizing the MT Thomas Award winner, a postdoc award for the Environmental Molecular Sciences Laboratory (EMSL). Following the presentations, there will be a reception for the awardees and all lab staff.
  Seattle The Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center will host its 3rd celebration of National Postdoc Appreciation Week with a party on Friday, September 23, 2011 from 5:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. Light dinner, dessert and beer will be provided.
