ADVOCACY COMMITTEE

Service on the Advocacy Committee is a great way to learn about the policies that affect postdoctoral scholars on an institutional and federal level, to have a direct impact on NPA’s advocacy efforts, and to network with others with similar interests at institutions and organizations across the country. The Advocacy Committee provides an opportunity for members to develop and showcase their skills in writing, organization, and leadership. Committee leaders coordinate the efforts of the Advocacy Committee with other Committees of the Membership, the Diversity Officers and International Officers, and the NPA Board of Directors, providing exposure to all facets of postdoctoral policy and advocacy work.

Mission: To address advocacy and policy issues relating to and affecting the postdoctoral community and advise the Board on potential actions.

Responsibilities of Advocacy Committee:

  • Monitor and provide comment on policy issues of interest to the postdoctoral community
  • Develop NPA recommendations for postdoctoral policies and practices for Institutions and advocate for their implementation
  • Advocate for fair and equitable training and mentoring environments for all postdocs in the United States, regardless of citizenship status
  • Advocate for increased diversity among postdoctoral scholars and ensure the needs of underrepresented groups are addressed
  • Maintain and expand relationships with federal agencies and national organizations postdoctoral policies
  • Collaborate with other NPA committees, officers, staff, and Board members on projects to advance/promote/facilitate the mission of the NPA.

General Position Description: Committee leaders are responsible for all of the duties listed above, with guidance from the Board of Directors and executive director. Committee leaders will work together to divide committee responsibilities and tasks as they see fit and provide assistance and direction to committee-level taskforces as appropriate. Leaders are responsible for ensuring that all aspects and taskforces within the committee’s mandate function smoothly.

Service as a committee leader provides a great opportunity for NPA members to develop and hone leadership skills, expand professional networks, advance the mission of the NPA, and work with colleagues from across the United States. Most business is accomplished via teleconference, email, and long-distance communications. Estimated weekly effort for hours of effort per week is approximately three to four hrs. Both postdocs and administrators are strongly encouraged to consider service in the position.
