The National Postdoctoral Association (NPA) is currently seeking strong, dedicated individuals to serve as the editor in chief and deputy editor of The POSTDOCket. If you know someone who can fill this position (including yourself), let us know.

 

About The POSTDOCket

The POSTDOCket is the monthly newsletter of the NPA covering news items and features of interest to the postdoctoral community and its stakeholders. The POSTDOCket is managed by the POSTDOCket Committee, which consists of associate editors led by the editor in chief and the deputy editor, in close collaboration with the NPA executive director and staff.

 

Mission:

  • Provide up-to-date and accurate information on a wide variety of current issues of interest to the postdoctoral community, administrators and other professionals
  • Publicize NPA events and accomplishments

Responsibilities of the Editor in Chief

The editor in chief, in consultation with the deputy editor, associate editors, and NPA staff, will develop and maintain an editorial calendar, prepare and review 12 issues for web publication, and disseminate the publication. The editor in chief will work with the deputy editor and NPA staff to divide the tasks as appropriate. The anticipated monthly time commitment for the editor in chief position is 10-12 hours.

  • Develop and maintain an annual editorial calendar
  • Supervise and provide assignments for associate editors, who provide individual authors with guidance and editorial review
  • Prepare a monthly list of proposed articles and prospective authors (in collaboration with NPA executive director and Board of Directors)
  • Develop and maintain a list of story and article ideas
  • Ensure authors and articles reflect the diversity of NPA members and disciplines
  • Maintain a historical index of contributing authors
  • Contact prospective authors to solicit articles
  • Work with authors and publishers to obtain reprint permissions, when necessary
  • Edit all newsletter content to ensure compliance with style manual and editorial guidelines
  • Prepare a final text with instructions for the staff as to article and graphic placement
  • Review and edit final lay-out (in collaboration with NPA executive director and staff)

Responsibilities of the Deputy Editor

The deputy editor will collaborate with the editor in chief to develop and maintain an editorial calendar, to prepare and review 12 issues for web publication, and to disseminate the publication. The deputy editor will work with the editor in chief and NPA staff to divide the tasks as appropriate. The anticipated monthly time commitment for the editor in chief position is 6-8 hours.

 

In particular, the deputy editor will assist the editor in chief in:

  • Preparing a list of proposed articles and prospective authors
  • Contacting prospective authors to solicit articles
  • Ensuring compliance with style manual and editorial review
  • Coordinating editorial assignments and infrastructure/workflow projects with POSTDOCket associate editors
  • Reviewing final layout of the publication
  • Drafting and reviewing materials for promotion of the newsletter via email and social media
  • Assessing web analytics to help identify high interest directions for the publication

Serving as Committee Leader

The editor in chief and deputy editor are NPA committee leader position and are great opportunities to develop or hone leadership skills, expand professional networks, advance the mission of the NPA, and work with a wonderful group of colleagues from across the United States. Most business is accomplished via teleconference, email, and long-distance communications. While no experience is needed, previous experience leading and working in a team environment would be a significant asset. Postdocs and administrators are strongly encouraged to consider service in the position. Committee leaders are expected to attend the NPA Annual Conference and participate in the annual Committee Leaders’ Institute.

 

Eligibility

Eligibility is limited to Full Members of the NPA, including Sustaining Member representatives. If you are not a Full Member but you are interested in a position, visit the NPA website for membership details

 

Application Instructions

All interested persons must submit a one (1) page application statement, a one (1) page CV detailing your leadership experience, and a brief, non-technical writing sample (not exceeding 1,000 words). The application statement should include:

  1. A declaration of whether the applicant wants to be considered for both positions, or specifically the editor in chief or deputy editor position;
  2. Applicant's qualifications for the position
  3. What the applicant can bring to the position, and
  4. The applicant’s interest and experience with the NPA and its mission.

Short-listed candidates will be expected to complete an editing test as part of the interview process.
