Compiled by the NPA

1. Who can enroll in this plan?
Anyone who has a Social Security number can enroll in this plan. Payments are made via Electronic Funds Transfer (EFT), so you will also need to have a bank account.

2. Can international postdocs continue to make contributions once they no longer live in the United States?
Yes, but they will have to maintain a bank account in the United States, as MetLife cannot handle EFTs outside of the United States, and they must make contributions in U.S. dollars.

3. How are retirement benefits paid out?
Retirement benefits are usually paid out via EFT or check.

4. How can you receive your retirement benefits if you no longer live in the United States?
MetLife pays out the benefits in U.S. dollars. There are different rules regarding paying by check or wire, and the Retirement Income Specialists can explain these rules to each participant on a case by case basis, depending on where the participant is living at the time. MetLife will follow any rules and regulations there are at time of payout.

5. How will enrollment in this plan affect those who are not U.S. citizens or residents?
We recommend that you talk to an attorney specializing in immigration issues regarding any concerns you have. NPA recommends the firm of Leavy & Frank (http://www.leavyfrank.com), which offers NPA members a discount on their services.
