The National Postdoctoral Association (NPA) is pleased to offer travel awards for postdoctoral scholars to attend our Eighth Annual Meeting, which will be held in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on March 12-14. The awards will cover registration, lodging, and travel expenses, up to the limit of the award. Award amounts will vary, but the maximum amount awarded will be $1,000.
Awards will be competitively allocated and limited to one per institution. The number of awards granted will depend on the estimated cost of each application, matching funds available, and the amount of funds raised by the NPA.
Goal of the Travel Award Program
- To ensure the broadest possible representation of postdoctoral scholars at the 8th Annual Meeting.
Eligibility
To be eligible for a travel award, the applicant must:
1. Be a postdoctoral scholar.
2. Be an NPA dues-paying full individual member in good standing at time of application OR be sponsored by an NPA sustaining (institutional) member in good standing at time of application.
3. If sponsored by a sustaining member, the applicant must have requested and been approved for affiliate membership at time of application.
4. Submit all required application materials by 11:59 p.m. EST on January 4, 2010.
We strongly encourage applications from:
- Postdocs who are members of under-represented minority groups within their field of study;
- Postdocs pursuing research in the physical sciences, engineering, the humanities, and other disciplines outside of the life sciences;
- Postdocs who have the support of their home institution, including matching travel funds;
- Postdocs who have not received travel awards in the previous years;
- Postdocs from institutions not having received travel awards in previous years (tracking is NOT the responsibility of the applicant);
- Postdocs who are interested in becoming more involved with the NPA and willing to serve on a Committee of the Membership;
- Postdocs who are currently serving on a Committee of the Membership.

Submitting an Application
A successful application will include the following:
1. A completed application form; Travel Award Application 2010 .
2, Letter of intent (please limit to one page) which describes:
- Your interest and goals in attending the NPA's 8th Annual Meeting
- Your efforts to obtain travel funds from your institution or other organization, and the response.
- Your affiliation and postdoc status.
3. One-page CV or résumé.
4. Budget justification for your expenses, which MUST include the Annual Meeting registration fee of $225 per person and lodging expenses for a minimum of two and a maximum of three nights at the Sheraton Philadelphia University City Hotel (approximately $190 per night including taxes of 15.2%). Other expenses may include:
- Airfare and/or ground transportation expenses
- Meal expenses while traveling
- Cost of the dine-around meal, excluding alcoholic beverages, on Friday evening.
Please see "Restrictions" for more information on allowable expenses. Total award amounts will not exceed $1000, and awards may not cover all of the expenses.

The Travel Awards Selection Committee will review all applications and select recipients by January 11, 2010. Recipients will be notified no later than January 18, 2010. Notification has been delayed. You will be notified by January 22, 2010.
Restrictions
- Travel expenses not allowable include: car rental fees; alcoholic beverages (including taxes and tips); meals purchased in lieu of meals provided as part of the Annual Meeting registration fee; sightseeing; and other expenses deemed unreasonable by the Travel Awards Selection Committee.
- Travel award recipients are required to stay at the Sheraton Philadelphia University City Hotel for a minimum of two nights and a maximum of three nights.
- Travel award recipients are required to attend all three days of the meeting.
