FAQs About the New NPA Dues Structure Print E-mail

July 27, 2011

If we have already paid our dues earlier this year, will we be billed for the increase?
No, the new rate will not take effect until your current membership comes up for renewal, at which time we’ll send you a renewal notice that reflects your new rate.

If we have purchased a two-year membership, when does the new rate take effect?
As with a one-year membership, the new rate will take effect upon the date of expiration/renewal of your current membership period.

What are the member benefits for Sustaining Members?
Your postdoc-office/institutional Sustaining Membership entitles an unlimited number of postdocs, faculty, and staff at your institution to free Affiliate Membership in the NPA. Your professional society/association membership entitles up to five staff or postdocs to free Affiliate Membership.

Follow this link for a full listing of benefits.   Follow this link to read about the NPA’s recent accomplishments in serving the postdoctoral community. We are working continuously to expand the member benefits available and have added several new resources over the past three years.

When was the last time the NPA increased its dues?

The NPA last increased its dues in 2008, the first time since its founding in 2003.

How are dues payments used within the NPA? Why have the dues been increased?

As with any non-profit member-driven association, the revenue from dues is used to support Member Services and daily operations, as well as to develop and maintain programming and resources.  From time to time, it is necessary to increase dues in order to maintain and/or improve services. The NPA works to keep dues as low as possible by seeking grant funding, donations, and other sources of revenue while keeping expenses to the minimum.

How do I apply for a hardship waiver? What are the criteria for the hardship waiver?

Application forms for a waiver are available upon request from Cathee Johnson Phillips (cjphillips{at}nationalpostdoc{dot}org).  Or, visit www.nationalpostdoc.org/sustaining-members-toolkit to download the waiver instructions and application form, which explain the criteria. You will find that under “Membership Fliers & Other Resources.” (You will need to log in to view the toolkit.)
