When looking for a job, most postdocs focus on criteria that are outlined in a position description such as job title, responsibilities, and salary. Often they do not factor in the workplace culture of an organization to their rubric, since "culture fit" can be difficult to identify. In addition, job seekers often believe that the job responsibilities are the most important factor to determine their potential success and satisfaction at an organization. Hundreds of articles and blogs have been written to highlight the importance of culture fit, but why are so few people paying attention to this important topic? In this webinar, we will cover why culture fit is important for a job seeker to investigate and ways to research and understand the culture for a given organization. The audience will be engaged frequently during this workshop starting with an individual self-assessment exercise to help the participants reflect on their "preferred" culture(s). This will be followed by an overview of a few different organizational cultures to highlight how vastly different these can be. The second interactive exercise will focus on tools that job seekers can use to help identify an organization's culture. Tools will also be highlighted to focus on identifying organizations that value people from diverse backgrounds. The third opportunity for audience engagement will focus on questions that a candidate can ask during the interview process and clues to look for to gain an understanding of an organization's culture. The goal of the interactive exercises is to empower the audience to become more proactive and informed about organizational culture during their job search. Lastly, since a career is comprised of multiple jobs and employers, the webinar will highlight how cultures change over time as organizations change in size, structure, focus, etc. Thus, the notion of culture fit is something that postdocs need to reflect on throughout their career to increase the probability for success and happiness as they grow professionally.
